“And you say that because…”
“Because it’s the truth,” Hawkeye said, bitterly. “And you know it, Sidney. However hard I try, it’s never going to change.”
Sidney was silent for a moment, acknowledging that what Hawkeye said was right. “It could be easier for you, though.”
“How?”
“You could tell him how you feel. He’s not going to turn you in.”
“That wouldn’t make it easier, would it? He might not turn me in, but he wouldn’t want to be friends any more, let alone…”
“You don’t know, Hawkeye.”
“I know how it goes. How it always goes. Tell someone how you feel, and they leave.”
“Is that so?”
“It’s always happened that way. Mom, Carlye, Trapper.”
“Trapper?”
“Same thing. He left without saying goodbye.”
“That doesn’t mean BJ will do the same.”
“I’m not going to risk it, Sidney. I’d rather be in hell and near him, than feel better and be without him. If you’ll excuse me, I ought to be in post-op.”
