Time passes, and the war is over, and yet not. No bombs fall; and yet the thud of mortar fire and the boom of an air raid still echo through the night.
I know what’s happening here. I’ve studied it in a hundred textbooks, and I’ve suffered it myself. I understand.
But watching you beside me, arms flung out and black hair a mess, I know that understanding doesn’t help. Only time can rid us of the fear, and the memories will be a scar we carry forever.
I’m thankful, though, that neither of us has to carry this alone.
