A friend in need can be a blessing or a curse—it depends whether it’s you or them in need.
Tonight, luckily, we both need the same thing.
“Just a couple more miles, doc,” Lyle says—he drives this thing so slowly. I don’t know why he wouldn’t let me drive—something to do the Marines having to prove that doctors aren’t capable of looking after themselves, probably.
Oppertunities like this are rare, and we don’t have long. An abandoned building, blankets on the floor. It’s strangely sweet that he thought to bring them.
“Doc?” he says, demanding my attention again, and as usual, he gets it. How could I not? The guy loves me, and with Trapper gone I’ve got no reason not to let him have what he needs. What I need, after all, is the same—a little human connection, someone to hold.
“Doc, you’re thinking too much again. You have to stop sometime.”
“Sorry, Lyle. Old habits are hard to kick.”
I’ve never had something like this before: Trapper was my first love, and the women are so different they barely count. Carlye never tried to stop me thinking, though she always complained I cared more about my training than her; and Trapper didn’t stop talking, even at the peak, so there was always something to think about.
Being able to stop is a welcome thing, suddenly. If I’m not thinking, caught up in the sensations and the moment, I can’t feel the pain of loss.
